Role Of Industrial Racks And Storage Systems In Warehousing Operations

Stacking goods and products in a warehouse or any industrial facility is done on metal structures of
varying sizes and industrial racks. For warehouse operations to function smoothly, industrial racking
and storage systems play a crucial role in companies' supply chain operations and logistics
operations. With the growth of online shopping and the need to have an extensive network of
logistics and distribution centers nationwide, today's reality makes optimizing space key.

Types of Industrial Racks

There are different industrial racking and storage systems specific to each unit load, storage need, or situation. Still, the one thing they all have in common is the utilization of taking advantage of the high ceilings for warehouse or industrial facilities to optimize the space needed. The industrial storage systems market has evolved from stationary and adjustable pallet racking systems to dynamic, versatile, and adaptable storage systems customized basis the needs of each customer.

The primary Industrial storage system used in manufacturing and industrial facilities and warehouses

for heavy loads is Pallet Racking. While there is a wide range of pallet racking systems, some of the

more common ones are:

 Selective Pallet Rack

 Double Deep Rack

 Back Racking / Push-Back Rack

 Pallet Flow Rack

 Drive-In/Drive-Through Rack

 Roll Formed Cantilever Rack

Selective Pallet Rack:  One of the most popular racking systems used for general warehousing, low-

turnover retail and manufacturing is the Selective Pallet Rack. The versatility of this kind of racking

system ensures efficient usage of space with easy access to loads stored using forklifts.

Double Deep Rack: These racks are designed for warehouses and manufacturing facilities by stacking

one row of selective racks behind the other. This highly cost-effective means increases high-density

storage capacity by up to 40%.

Back Racking / Push-Back Rack: Push-back racks are those where pallets sit are stacked up to five

deep on carts that slide forward as each pallet at the front is removed. These pallets help lower

picking times and are ideal for applications that require moving many food-related products.

Pallet Flow Rack: These racks are sloping in nature and have a first-in-first-out loading system. Also

known as gravity racks, the higher end of the stack sees the addition of newer pallets while those

first removed or consumed are at the lower end of the rack. Pallet flow racks can double or triple

storage capacity and are best suited for food distribution centers, freezer warehouses, and storage

of perishable consumer goods.

Drive-In/Drive-Through Rack: These racks allow you to have fewer aisles while still storing an

additional 75% more pallets than on a selective racking system. These racks can run six deep and

allow forklifts to drive directly into the racks to access the products they need to move.

The only difference between the two is that Drive-in Racks have one entry and exit, whereas all

Drive-Through Racks have separate entrances and exits. Both these types of racks have the highest

density of all the racking solutions available from various manufacturers.

Drive-in and Drive-Through racks offer the undeniable advantages of holding many loads while

simultaneously reducing space costs. These racks store large volumes of similar products in

warehouses, freezers, coolers, and others.

Roll Formed Cantilever Rack: These racking systems allow for the storage of horizontally inclined

goods and are designed with no uprights to obstruct the use of horizontal space. These are ideally

suited to store bulky and high-volume goods like furniture, timber, tubing, carpets, tires, piping,

textiles, and other such goods. The best feature of these racks is the adjustable lock joints which

allow for quick and easy height readjustment if needed.
